About the School

The Imaging of 3D structures Research School is a joint initiative between the faculties of science (N-fak), medicine (M-fak) and engineering (LTH) at Lund University to promote scientific activities surrounding the MAX IV and ESS facilities being built in Lund.

Imaging of 3D structures

The overall topic of the school is "Imaging of 3D structures", covering X-ray and neutron imaging at all length scales – from protein structures to medical and engineering imaging. The aim is to educate PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers for activities at the two future large-scale infrastructures in Lund – Max-IV and ESS. Though many types of imaging are possible with standard laboratory equipment (such as e.g. PET/SPECT/MR, super-resolution, confocal, electron microscopy, live cell imaging, photo-acoustic microscopy etc.), imaging at the large scale facilities has the potential to provide higher resolutions in space and time and a range of tuneable image contrasts. With a broad knowledge about different techniques, an educated choice of a given method for a particular application is possible.

The school is intended to increase the network of the members, so students enrolled will get easier access to the relevant research groups at Lund University engaged in imaging of 3D structures.

To cover the wide range of techniques and applications in this field, the research school activities consists of:

  • A one-week introductory school for LU and visiting students with lectures covering the different areas of imaging based on attenuation, refraction and diffraction. (3 ECTS) September 30 - October 4, 2019
  • Additionally, an individual hands-on project for LU students can be scheduled with a mentor. Projects are evaluated by a written report and oral presentation (4.5 ECTS)

Furthermore, each student has the opportunity to specialise in a particular imaging area, by following specialised courses.

Together with the research schools ADMIRE and COMPUTE, this research school will provide the foundations for multi-platform imaging across a wide range of research areas.

Enrollment:

A total of 20 students are accepted each year. Application for enrollment for 2019 is currently open:
